14/4 - Isolation: Sickness

The virus has taken me, or well, something has. I started feeling unwell last night, and here I am, 39.5 degrees warm. However, ill or not, I promised the programmers I’d help them work their problems out now before they start affecting the game overall.

My educated guess about the situation was correct. They work in different ways when it comes to work pressure. No one is really right, and no one is really wrong either. The plan was for the lead to plan each week after my initial plan. I give them a bunch of tasks - these tasks should be done at the end of the week. The lead wanted to hand them out one by one - making sure the tasks got done right before handing out a new assignment. The other programmer would rather plan out their week on their own, know exactly what they need to do during the week and then “put effort in according to that”. I understand that train of thought, and it is good to know how much work you have during a week, but you can’t have the attitude that you’ll only put effort in according to how big the task is. That would mean that the work is only bare minimum, and extra things would never get done.

After some discussion we eventually came to the conclusion that they should try to make sure all tasks that need to be done are marked out at the beginning of the week, but also make sure that the programmer knows that fast solutions won’t cut it now that we’re working towards the PS4. Code needs to be optimized, and it’s better to work towards something optimized from the beginning than to make quick fixes that won’t hold up in the end and will need complete rework.
