9/4 - Isolation: Day One

Writer's picture: Saga LindquistSaga Lindquist

This was a messy day. It’s a half day, which makes it shorter than normal, but everyone is also in the process of moving all of their things home.

Our lea programmer has a problem with one of the programmers not doing enough work, and that he’s hard to reach at times. He wants to discuss eventual cuts to the game, because without him he can’t make it work. I understand his concern, but before we start cutting things out, I’d like to talk to this programmer myself. He is not the type to duck work, and he is really good at what he does. Sure enough, his take on it isn’t the same. We decided to have a meeting first thing next week with all of the programmers, to make sure that we fix this thing before it affects the outcome of the product.

My guess is that they operate in different ways. The lead wants to hand out one assignment at the time, and make sure it’s done well and without pressure before he hands out the next one. The other programmer would rather have a full list of tasks he has to get done during the whole week, because he likes working under pressure. Their differences have led to one of them not putting their full effort into things, because there is no pressure to finish. I think we’ll see during next week’s meeting.

We also have had one of the artists be absent for almost the entire project so far. She’s been ill, and while doing some occasional work, she’s mostly been completely gone. This concerns me, since she is an animator, and her biggest part to play in the whole project starts during next week. The planning has been made with three animators in mind, but that might have to change, depending on how she is feeling. I took some time today to check with her how she’s doing and when she thinks she’ll be well enough to work. Hopefully she can be well next week, otherwise we’ll have to figure out a solution that doesn’t take too much away from everything else.
